Men Who Hold Back Judgment

In Ezekiel 22, God declares that He searched for a man to “make up the hedge” and “stand in the gap” so judgment could be turned away—but found none. Woven throughout Scripture is the fact that God still looks for people who will stand between destruction and mercy.

Judgment doesn’t always come because everything is broken—it often comes because there’s just one gap. A breach. A weak place left unguarded. One opening can undo the strength of an entire fence.

And the challenge remains: stop making excuses and start filling gaps.

Too often we focus on where we’ve fallen, but Psalm 37 reminds us there’s a difference between falling and being cast down. Falling is not failure if you’re still in the fight. The enemy wants you to believe one mistake means it’s over, but God says otherwise.

The promise is clear: the steps of a man engaged in the fight are ordered by the Lord. Not the perfect man. Not the flawless man. But the one who refuses to quit.

That’s the call for every believer.

Stay in the fight.

Fight for your family.

Fight for your marriage.

Fight for your children.

Fight for your soul.

Throughout Scripture, God repeatedly looked for one person willing to stand in the gap—Noah, Abraham, Moses, pastors, fathers, leaders. One person willing to say, “Give it one more year. One more chance. Let me pray. Let me fast. Let me help.”  That’s what mercy often looks like: someone standing between judgment and destruction.

The truth is, every life has gaps—weak points, vulnerable places, areas where the enemy looks for access. It may be compromise, bitterness, distraction, or temptation. It may be something small, but small gaps can lead to great destruction if left unattended.

But the good news is this: God doesn’t abandon those who fall. He upholds those who stay engaged. And beyond that, He places people in our lives—pastors, friends, mentors, brothers and sisters in Christ—who help lift us when we’re down and remind us not to quit.

This generation doesn’t need more excuse makers.

It needs gap fillers. People who refuse to back down. People who stay engaged. People who stand in the breach when others are struggling.

Because when there’s still a fight in you, there’s still a future ahead of you.
