Which Tower?

Every person is building something.

Whether we realize it or not, our lives are constantly moving toward a source of security, identity, and hope. The question isn't if we're building—it’s which tower are we building?

Genesis 11 tells the story of the Tower of Babel, where humanity united around one purpose: to make a name for themselves. Their tower represented self-reliance, pride, and the desire to reach heaven on their own terms. In sharp contrast, Proverbs 18:10 declares, "The name of the Lord is a strong tower: the righteous runneth into it, and is safe." One tower is built by human effort. The other is established by God's power.

Life constantly asks us to choose between the two.

When fear, uncertainty, disappointment, or confusion come, we're tempted to run toward towers we've constructed ourselves—our own understanding, our own strength, or even unhealthy ways of coping. Those towers may promise safety, but they can never provide lasting security. Only the name of Jesus offers a refuge that cannot be shaken.

Throughout Scripture, towers often represented places of vision. From a tower, watchmen could see farther than those standing on the ground. The higher perspective revealed what couldn't be seen from below. In the same way, when we find our refuge in Christ, He lifts our perspective above the circumstances that once seemed overwhelming. Our problems don't always disappear immediately, but we begin to see them through God's promises instead of our fears.

One of the most powerful reminders throughout the Bible is that God has always used His Word to redirect His people. From Habakkuk receiving vision in the tower, to Ezra standing on a wooden platform to read the Law, to Jesus opening the Scriptures and declaring liberty to the captives, God continually uses His Word to call people out of hopelessness and back into purpose.

The goal isn't simply to survive another difficult season—it's to tear down every false tower that competes for our trust. Fear doesn't get the final word. Addiction doesn't get the final word. Doubt doesn't get the final word. Shame doesn't get the final word. The name of Jesus does.

No matter what battle you're facing today, there is still a strong tower available. There is still hope for your family. There is still hope for your future. There is still vision beyond the valley.

The question remains the same for every one of us:

Which tower will you run to?
