Learning To Count

There’s something deeply human about the way we measure life—we count days, delays, victories, and setbacks. But while we may be good at counting, we don’t always count the way God does.

2 Peter 3:8 tells us that “one day is with the Lord as a thousand years, and a thousand years as one day.” That truth immediately challenges how we measure time, delay, and even disappointment. What feels like a long, drawn-out season to us may simply be a moment in God’s plan. And while we may interpret delay as neglect, God defines it as longsuffering—patiently working for our good and the salvation of others.
The reality is, we often count the wrong things. We count failures, mistakes, missed opportunities, and delays. We replay moments where we feel like we’ve fallen short. But God counts differently. Where we count faults, He counts mercy. Where we count time passing, He counts purpose unfolding. Where we see disqualification, He sees potential.
Even more powerful is this: God isn’t just counting outcomes—He’s counting moments. Every tear, every prayer, every act of obedience matters. Nothing is wasted. God even numbers the hairs on our head—not because He needs the data, but because He deeply values the details of our lives.
This shifts how we respond to life’s challenges. When trials come, we don’t naturally “count it all joy.” Yet Scripture calls us to do exactly that—not because the situation is easy, but because God is using it. What we see as pressure, God sees as process. What we label as struggle, God may be using for strength.
And here’s the hope that changes everything: when you put God back into the equation, He can restore what feels lost and rebalance what feels off. Years that seemed wasted, seasons that felt unproductive, and moments marked by pain are not beyond His reach.
God has the ability to restore years in a single moment and to step onto the scales of your life and bring perfect balance.
What felt heavy and overwhelming can suddenly shift when His hand is involved. When we stop counting Him out and start counting Him in, we begin to see just how powerful His intervention can be.
Perhaps the most important takeaway is this: don’t count God out.
Too often, we measure our situation and conclude that it’s too far gone, too broken, or too late. But the message makes it clear—God is not slack concerning His promises. If He said it, it will come to pass. Our responsibility is not to figure out the timeline, but to keep faith in the promise.
And here’s the hope for every one of us: if you feel like you’ve miscounted your life—misjudged your past or misunderstood your present—you can give God something new to count today. Repentance counts. Faith counts. Obedience counts. Even a simple “thank you” can shift everything.
At the end of the day, learning to count like God means trusting His perspective over ours. It means believing that He’s still working, still counting, and still faithful.
So whatever you’re facing—don’t count God out. Count Him in.
